Ian volunteers for the Information and Advice team at Improving Lives Plymouth as a Benefit Claims Assistant. He has a long history as a volunteer supporting the work of Age UK, initially as a “Befriender” and then offering benefits advice. He joined the team at Improving Lives Plymouth in October 2015, meeting with clients and offering assistance in benefit entitlements on a 1-1 basis.  Ian chose to volunteer to learn new skills and to use his spare time in a positive, constructive and conducive way. Ian came to us some time ago wanting to be a volunteer, he wasn't sure what he could do to help but was full of enthusiasm, advising he would do any necessary training to help this happen. I really don't think this service could manage without him.

As a tetraplegic, Ian needed specialist equipment to be able to use the computer and telephone systems. He guided us through what was needed and from the minute all was in place I knew he was going to be a real asset to us. Ian is always keen to learn and has attended benefits training and team meetings to keep his knowledge up to date. He is now a proficient “Benefits Advisor” who supports our whole team, but most of all it is Ian’s commitment, humour, and loyalty to his colleagues and clients that has stood out. He loves what he does and you can see that. He always has a positive attitude and this comes over to some of the disabled clients he sees and I think they feel inspired by him.

Ian is an inspiration to all staff and volunteers and has become a big part of the Information & Advice team.
